Anaphylactic shock is an extreme allergic reaction. It can cause an itchy rash, swollen eyes, lips and face, narrowing of airways – making it hard to breath and loss of consciousness. This is the result of the bodies immune system overreacting to a harmless substance, such as food or an insect sting.

When somebody has such an extreme allergy they usually carry an epipen around with them. This contains a shot of adrenaline that stops the airways from closing up, meaning that they will survive for long enough to get to hospital and receive treatment.
