A black hole isn’t really a hole, it is a very dense dead star that sucks in matter and light (making it appear black). Here is an article that describes a theoretical trip into a black hole better than I can:

The reason a black hole is called a black hole is because we can’t see any light coming from it – that’s because it sucks all the light in so we can’t see it with any of our telescopes. In fact it sucks in anything that it can find around it and it can’t escape again! Most of our observations of the Universe rely on us being able to see the light. When stars die, they eventually collapse into themselves because they don’t have enough energy to overcome their own gravity – it works in a similar way to a material on earth going from a gas to a liquid to a solid when you cool it down – it takes up less volume and becomes denser.

Any matter that has been drawn into the back hole…squished into super dense material. A bit like my cooking!
