The first computers were designed to understand a simple code that the programmer introduced. Computers only know how to read a program because someone has given it instructions on how to interpret the code. So the programmer came up with the code before the computer existed.

Because the designed the computer to understand the code from the programmer. The first programmable computer was called the Z1 and was designed by Konrad Zuse. It is much much bigger than computers we have today!
