• Question: On a scale of one to ten, how satisfying is the activity of torturing crystals?

      Good question! I would have to say 10 as I absolutely love my job! I wouldn’t want to be a crystal though as the X-rays and lasers would probably burn through me if got in the way of them. In fact, we often kill crystals in the course of our experiments. There is nothing more satisfying though, when the torturing really helps you to understand how something you’ve made is doing its job and you can see what is happening to the atoms and molecules in front of your eyes in three-dimensions!
