The biggest challenge in my day is being able to motivate myself to stop talking to people and to go and do some work. Once I’ve started it’s not usually a problem, but it’s so difficult to get moving in the morning!
Quite often I do experiments that just don’t work, for no explicable reason. You have to try not to get too downhearted about it and think of another way to get to the answer.

Explaining the unexpected! When I think up an experiment I *usually* have an idea of what I expect a positive result and a negative result will look like. Sometimes it isn’t as black and white as this and you need to use your judgement and experience or speak to other scientists to work out what’s really going on.

There are lots of challenges every day. I normally need to persuade myself to do the boring jobs as otherwise they would never get done! Understanding the results of experiments is always a challenge and sometimes you think you need to do just one more experiment and in doing that you only find more questions!

my main challenge is managing to do all the things I promised people I would do. I guess that the best way to resolve this is to promise less!

My biggest challenge is time. There are simply not enough hours in the day or days in the week. Alas, it is the toughest thing for me to resolve, so I just work longer hours 🙂
