The biggest problem in my mind is that of finding a renewable energy source. Fossil fuels are going to run out and everything in the world relies on an energy source of some sort, particularly technology, so if we don’t sort this out at some point before it all runs out, we’re going to be in trouble!

The world is facing numerous problems, global warming, a reliance on fossil fuels, over population, sources of food and clean water, spread of infectious disease, amongst others.

The Longitude prize has been setup to identify what people think is the biggest challenge in our lifetime and has a prize of £10 million to try and find a solution to the problem. You can vote in the longitude prize at the website below and there is even a zone, here on “I’m a scientist…” where you can ask questions about it:

      About this Zone

My work involves trying to develop new drugs for bacterial infections so I will choose this as the biggest problem. Bacteria are becoming resistant to the drugs we have available at an alarming rate and we are not finding new drugs fast enough. If we don’t improve this then bacterial infections will be the cause of many deaths that we could have previously avoided, and things like simple surgeries will be quite dangerous.
