Meteoroid is still in space. It becomes a meteorite when it makes it through the Earths atmosphere to the earths surface.

Phil has given the answer. And when it is a shooting star going through the atmosphere it is called a “meteor”. I have written some articles for the press from time to time, and there I would only be allowed to call these things “space rocks”!
