It has to be Diamond Light Source – although technically it is a facility rather than a piece of kit. It is one of the most sophisticated pieces of scientific technology in the country and around the world and we are very lucky to have it here in the UK.

Trips to Diamond are always exciting as you prepare all your crystals and pack them up, hoping to come back with new data sets which can produce new structures.

I think my favourite piece of kit is my hot-stage microscope. This lets me look at my crystals whilst I’m heating and cooling them and look for the crystals changing shape and colour!

I’ve not been able to use it yet (there are lots of people wanting to, so there’s big queue) but I’m really excited to use the gas kit where I work. This pumps lots of gas into the material you’ve made so you can see how much it can hold. It’s not until I’ve done this measurement that I’ll know whether my work has been successful or not!

My reading glasses. They help me better interact with everything in my lab!
