We can use instruments like MRI scanners to monitor blood flow and levels of activity in different parts of the brain under different situations. Scientists actually used this technique to monitor the brain activity of a coma patient when asked simple yes no questions and were able to communicate with him. The more we learn about the brain the more impressive it is.
