Animals evolved from multicellular life some 900-1000 million years ago. The first singled-celled life evolved some 3.8 billon years ago, but by around 3 billion years ago cells started working together to form more complex life. However, the leap from multicellular life to animals is a tough period to search for fossils, as they were all soft-bodied at this time. We only get small glimpses of animals from exceptional fossils, such as the ±580 million year old Edicaran animals…which range from mere ‘smears’ on rock to some rather large +1m long beasties that lived in the ancient oceans.
