Dorothy Hodgkin is a big inspiration for me. She pioneered protein crystallography – a technique I use a lot. She solved the first structure of a steroid, of penicillin, vitamin B12 and the structure of insulin which was amazing work. She won the nobel prize in 1964 for her fantastic work.

I am also very inspired by Dorothy Hodgkin but also by Rosalind Franklin. She was the person who made careful measurements that allowed us to work out the structure of DNA. She is an unsung hero and died very young before the Nobel prize for the discovery of DNA was awarded. Her results were shown to Watson and Crick without her knowledge too!

Martyn Poliakoff – he’s a professor at my university who makes lots of videos all about chemistry, called the Periodic Table of Elements. Check them out here: http://www.periodicvideos.com/ (I especially recommend the one where they set fire to a creme egg! http://www.periodicvideos.com/videos/feature_creme_egg.htm)
