Cats have evolved to have very good reflexes which help them rearrange in the air to land the right way up, this doesn’t mean that they still won’t get injured. Research has shown that there is an optimal height from which when a cat falls, it can rearrange itself and land without injury. When a cat falls from a height below this point it has greater difficulty righting itself and is more often injured.

The back bone of cats (including the tail of course) are beautifully adapted to help twist the body of the cat as they fall…so landing on their feet. However, as they land, they curve their backs up into an arch prior to impact, that enable them to absorb the forces acting on them during impact. Stunning adaptation…wish i could do it, but that would mean I needed a tail!
