Our brains recognise 5 different tastes: bitter, sweet, salty, sour and umami (savory) and the molecules in food can trigger different responses in different people making things taste differently for everyone. Also, some people have more tastebuds on their tongues than others (these are called supertasters!) and can find strong tasting or spicy foods overwhelming.

If you want to find out whether you or your friends are supertasters you can try this experiment here http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/0/22941835
