      We exist in 3 dimensions, so do the cells in our bodies and so do the molecules inside our cells. If we want to design new drugs to treat molecules in our bodies that are misbehaving then understanding the shape and details can help a lot. Sometimes when looking at these things in two dimensions on a screen you might not quite appreciate something that is more obvious in 3D and so having a real model that you can hold and look at closely from different angles you might realise something new that you otherwise could have missed.

      The main idea of getting a 3D printer would be to make models of real proteins so we could show people exactly what we do and how we do it.
